literature analysis #3

opics and or Events: 1) Every Second Counts is about the remarkable story of Lance's Armstrong comeback from testicular cancer and how he fights the odds and wins the Tour De France 5 consecative times. It captures the mindset of a man who has to make time for his family as well his love for biking. But along this perilous journey he talks about his experience with cancer which ironically taught him to live life day by day. 2) Lance wrote this book to let everyone know how his life was during cancer and how precious time is. he wanted to let the whole world understand that he is just an ordinary man like everyone else, he explicitly stated over and over again that if he can survive cancer so can you. 3) I chose this book because I myself am an athlete and thought it would be easy to read about a biography of an athlete. From the front cover of Lance Armstrongs exstatic smile I could already relate and conncet to the book. Once I started reading I was hooked. He quickly talks about his first encounter of finding out he had cancer, from that point on I knew I would like this book. " now that I know im going to die, what will I do?" this quote from the book is a perfect example on how realistic and logical this book is. 4) This question made me laugh. Yes this book is as real as it gets and some! Cancer, bike riding, family, how much more real can it get? His thoughts and feelings towards cancer really inspired me to do my best in life. Appreciate what I have today because in fact it could all be gone or change tomorrow. I connected to lance in a life threatening sickness and athletic point of view. People: 1) Lance talks a lot about his family; wife named kik, son luke, and twin daughters. There are so many people mentioned in this book that it would to much to list them all but the ones he talks about most and sincerly is his family. He describes hiw wife as supportive and strong minded. he has very good communication with her but never mention any fights. I'm sure they do fight but why would he want to but that in a book as inspiring as this? I bet if I met his family in person it would be the typical kids playing and couple arguing about something situation. but after reading the book and understanding how Lance Embraces life I came to a conclusion, the way he describes his family is the way they actuall act. Man had life threatening cancer for petes sake! His life is in no way normal. 2) His cancer friend Sally reed is a cancer survivor patient who clocked in over a thousand volunteer hours devoted to helping cancer patients. Down side is lance is not very good at physically describing people so I can not do the honor of giving you a full description of a certain person. He more describes ones personality and action which is fine, you dont judge a book by the cover. His wife kik, very beautiful slender women with green eyes. She has blonde hair is a very strong hearted women says armstrong. She helped hi, get through cancer. Luke lance's son is a almsot split image of himself. Though lance did not really describe how his son looked his described his sons ambition and love for biking " He fell off his bike face first and after some bruises, cuts, and crying he got right back on it, Just like his daddy". I can tell from how he talks about his sone he is very proud and happy to have one. He gets deep pleasure and satisfaction to know he has a prodigy of his own. 3) Well the fact that Lance Armstong himself talks about them a lot says it all. With all the people he sees, cancer patients, public, press, cycylist; he seems to talk about these the most. These individuals mean the most to him in his precious life. They deserve to be talked about. Style 1) The author used a more journalist/biography approach with hints on the symbolism of life terms. For example, " What I didnt and couldnt address at the time was the prospect of life.". 2) Lance loves to use lenghty descriptions of everything. Forexample in the beggining of the book I loved how he described the giant waterfall he goes to jump in just to clear his mind. " Its a drop so long.... Long enough to think first one thing, A Little fear is good for you." .This quote really captured the use and the meaning the water fall has to him. Most books will describe the water fall magnificent or even try to glorify it cliche. lance describes it for what it is and what its made to be used for and that is clear your mind from all the obstacles life gives you. 3) The author uses his own thoughts to set a certain tone in parts of the story. 4) I believe Lance had very different perspectives towards cancer. Its a diease that could of killed him but having survived it gave him new motive to do better and work harder in life, " My house is burned, but I can see the sky." Its very ironic how he is in some way happy the thing that was going to kill him saved him? MAde him appreciate the little things in life and with nothing to lose and everything to gain lance is just a dangerous man to be around. Its the reason why he is so optimistic, postive and happy in to be alive. 5) Author didnt really offer any articles excpet what you can hear from the Tour De France skeptics. But if you take a close look into the book he talks about articles accusing him of doping up, doubt he wants to prmotoe those articles

Paper cut

Oh my gosh. This paper was the most stressful thing to complete. So much of my time and effort was thrown into this paper the first time it was assigned to the class. I busted it out and honestly I think its unfair that the people who came to class with it the first time didn't get extra credit. A lot of people just blew it off and because of that we wasted time trying to get the slackers caught up. I edited it And changed it up a little bit and I feel good about myself and I'm proud of my final product.

Connecting the dots

I wasn't present in class today, but it appears that today they had gone over the frankstein papers we constructed within hours of Sunday night. I believe my paper was okay, I waited last minute to do and I'm sure I could've done better with a little more guidelines and I would've loved to have constructed a rough and have Preston or fellow peers correct it. Then after that we start to construct the final draft. Racial profiling seems like a easy topic to tackle but its not easy. Figuring out what to write and put in the essay was like trying to swim through fire blindfolded.

7times

The essay is well written and has the tone of someone who is curious and who is caring. Not caring as in a person who cares for another person, but a person caring for information and justice. The facts are he was shot 7 times, 6times to many and I believe that the two blogs are similar in contex but different in meaning, one is expressing feelings and one is just a essay about what happened.

Racial profiling lives on

So after I had read this article and kind of Sat back and enjoyed an episode of cops, it made me think about the topic of us( the citizens of the U.S) don't really know that we have the right to escape police harassment. Go on YouTube and watch videos of innocent people getting harrassed, violated and sometimes beaten brutally. I watched a video on a 19 year old African American skateboarder who was beaten by at least 6 police officers for riding his skateboard on the wrong side of the street? I've rode my bike on the opposite side of the street countless times infront of police officers and I was never beaten in public for it? Racial profiling lives on.

So after the watching the video and counting how many times the ball was thrown I got it right. I counted the people in white passing the ball 15 times. When you get asked to do a task Like that you in your head its going to be the way you project its going to be, a person in a white tee surrounded by others. In here where we think is a lot different from out there and what others think, out there is a lot more complicated then in here.

tools that change the way we think

You have access to all the information people have documented since people could write in the palm of your hand thanks to the Internet. Making an essay on how Ben Franklin created electricity would involve hours and hours reading and searching for the right book, but with the Internet you just search it and get answers within seconds. I also agree with what Erik has to say, the Internet is both positive and negative effects.

filter bubbles

I learned that websites and social sites are limiting what we view and what others view. A filter bubble is basically controlling what you view because they're trying to guess who you are and personalize it to what you do. It kind of upsets me because it limits me on the information that I see and read and I like reading and being informed on things. I also believe that its really not necessary to personalize what people read. I'm just going to start using duckduckgo.com because Preston said it doesn't just give you a small percentage of information but all the info.

Value of learning/Value of life

Okay so my week to be is pretty stuffed with this class and some personal stuff, in class is going to be a little confusing because we have no idea what were doing the rest of the week and that's the good and the bad of this class. The one thing we did get assigned is answering the activity questions in this section called the value of life, the reading I chose was Hamlets famous "to be or not to be" soliloquy. Everything I type from this sentence on has to do with the value of life through Hamlet.

Activity 1
My thoughts about being alive is that it's a luxury. People always wish that a passed loved one could be "Alive" to enjoy the memorable moments that they have encountered since the passing. Humans that aren't dying are enjoying the luxury of being of being alive, its plain and simple. How do you assign value to life? I've never been so stumped by a question in my life until reading this one, then I realized that there isn't a right or wrong answer to this. We can assign value to life anyway that we desire, no one is the same and everyone has different values and different meanings of value. In life, the little things can be just as challenging as the big things( little problems/ big problems) only because the little things can cause a snow ball effect and just keep getting bigger and bigger. Steve forgot to bring his note cards to Spanish and didn't write the words down so that he could study, forgetting those note cards made him a little behind. "I will do it when I get home" is what Steve told his teacher, instead Steve didn't do the homework and watched T.V. In class he's slap dashing everything together and trying to slide by, test time comes around and he fails the test. Steve's parents are disappointed and ground him, the snow ball will catch up to you and it sucks when it hits you. Now lets try and focus on the good things about life such as your first family vacation, your first date, your first high school dance and your first car, the list can go on and on, I enjoy life everyday. The way i value life is simple, live to make life the meaning you want it to be, you could choose to devote your life to charity and volunteer work for many communities or you could devote your life to making money and being successful, its yours choice and its all up to you.
Activity 3
1. I have little experience when dealing with Hamlet, but I've read Romeo&Juliet sophomore year.
2.The page format and annotations are placed awkwardly, but that is what makes the play beautiful and so well known.
3.I noticed that his writing is very similar to how people may write and interpret poetry that is also very compact.
Activity 4
1. A tragedy could be classified as a devastating event or a really sad story that involves a lot of death. Any type of theme that demoralizes the meaning of happiness can be found in tragedy's, outcomes such as death, regret and sorrow are also well known in tragedy's.
2.Shakespheres language is very difficult to understand and its filled with unfamiliar words and hard to understand phrases.
3.When i dont understand something I usually have to re read the parts that don't make sense to me or eventually ask someone to help.
4. I believe that the question is asking if he should be the person that he isn't write now or stay neutral and be the same person he is. I think that by killing his uncle and continuing on with his life he chose to be the different person.
Activity 7
1. Hamlet asks the central question of soliloquy in the first line, "to be or not to be".
2. In greater detail he restates the  question  through lines 2-5
3. Hamlet doesn't really answer his own question, he struggles to come to a conclusion about either acting and changing his life or to be neutral. Then Hamlet starts talking about what happens when you remain neutral and talks about the fear of what comes after death.
4. In his speech he asked two more questions, why anyone would put up with the suffering humans endure in life when they have the means to escape and then the second one Hamlet suggest that fear of the unknown causes us to bear the burdens owe have.
5. when Ophelia enters the room it cuts off Hamlets thoughts and then destroys the suspense that has been building up to find out the answer to his question because he never finishes his thoughts. Nick has the other part of my questions and Elias did what is a life worth

Lit Analysis #2

Topics and Events
The book I selected to read is called "Three years in the gas chambers" and the author of the book is Filip Muller and he is a survivor/ Eye witness of Auschwitz. This story is basically all about his struggle for survival and the road blocks he had to endure. He watches people he grew up with, get tossed into the oven, he threw them in. Working in that room gave him the privilige of staying alive. Friends and family were murdered and tortured before his eyes, then later that day he saw them again when he had to strip them down and get them ready for the ovens. My authors decided to write about this because its his story of surviving the worst mass attempt of Jewish extermination. Also I believe that he is among the few who have actually survived and was strong enough to write his story. This book really caught my attention because I'm a sucker for books about world wars and historic events. By putting myself in the shoes of Filip it makes the book way more interesting and it just attaches my brain to the book. This book is as realistic as it gets, I could easily connect to my friends grandpa who had told us stories about being in the Korean and Vietnam war because he watched friends and close ones die before his eyes and then having to see them later in the coffin.
People
The authors choices say the he wanted to make it through the holocaust at whatever the cost is. He chose to write about all this because he was one of the few and proud Jewish people that survived the worst attempt to exterminate a certain race. There's a few characters in this book that really caught my attention,Fischl and Filip. Fischl is a strong willed man, he is tall and very muscular. The German camp managers wanted to keep him alive because he was a good worker and would do anything to keep himself alive and well feed at any cost. Filip is very similar to Fischl very strong willed, hes willing to make sacrafices, he wants to see himself and others to live to see the next day. The story didn't really describe the guys in detail but I'm sure they had brown hair and brown eyes and a little taller then average. If I was to characterize them in a non fiction book, I'd most likely do direct because I'd want people to see the view of their life through their eyes. I really don't know why these people are so interesting to me. Three years in the gas chambers and in the crematorium room, Filip had only watched Fischl work there for two years, watching Fischl work and watching how the guards treated him mad Filip think that Fischl was among the few that were privileged and successful. Fischl was a prisoner before Auschwitz and he was a prison again in Auschwitz, he was a murderer before Auschwitz and he's a murderer in Auschwitz. He used both approaches because it was appropiate, Filip wanted to be Fischls friend because of his size and his privileges and my last impression of Fischl is simple, I'd do the same thing as Filip and respect him for what he's doing know but still question his loyalty to fellow Jewish people. Throughout the story it felt like I was reading someones journal, so it felt like I'd met a person. The things that he described, watching people die, watching people be cremated, listen to how the German leaders would trick men, women and children to think that they were going to take a shower but really they were stepping into the gas chambers and then listen to the screams and bangs while the troops joked saying " maybe the showers to hot for them", only humans could experience that.
Style
The author made the story journalistic, he had kept track of what day he went to a certain camp and the month or year he left that place and had been moved to another. In the story the author was more lengthy and detailed on the places and actions, but mostly places and this made the story long and boring after about 60 pages or so. He used really detailed descriptions of everything that was happening around him, mostly death and sorrow. His attitude was that of someone trying to survive, he wanted to live, he wanted to save as many people as he could, and he wanted to watch the Nazi force be destroyed.
Enduring Memory
One idea that I will remembering because of this story is the value of life and how it means so much to us and  how much everyone around us will be influenced to find their value in life also.

To be or not to be

To act for what is right or go with the flow, you can either endure the pain , or you can grab the bull by its horns and go for a ride, should i just check out of this world, or attack the unknown. this is a question that decides my value in life If i do check out and just accept it, i can slide by and not care but the con is that i need to handle my problems like a man, being a man gets you the respect, it only gets harder as life goes on. But the path to being a man or being a grown up is a battle if you don't do something to prove your value in life though, you will regret it and always wish you had done something but knowing the hardship of standing up scares us all no matter our size physically or mentally ( I dont really get the last 6-5 lines) The level that appeals to me most is honestly just going with the flow, because knowing how hard it is to stand up is scary/demoralizing to most. I roll over a lot and just give in to what is happening around me because im to scared to try and make difference but fail in the end, one of societies biggest fears is failing, once you fail the hole just gets deeper. The path i want to take is the path of standing up and actually making a difference in my life or in something that affects my life.

TO ACT OR NOT TO ACT

The difference between hamlet and Steve is very plain to see, hamlet is seeking revenge but is to hesitant and weak, while Steve has his eyes set on the mindset that anything is possible. Hamlet is more of a follower while Steve is a leader. Sometimes you just have to grab the bull by the horns and hold on tight.

Dear Steve

You know, I would have loved to have a conversation with this man. After reading his speech and hearing about his road blocks, its lnd of inspiring. My family memebers want me to go to college, I want to go to college but with this economy and my family's circumstances, the chances are very slim but I'm putting all my effort into it. If there's one thing I learned from this speech is to simply take chances, not all the time but when you comfortable to do so, b7t then you just have to run into a darkroom and hope you find the light switch. Another thing learned is that you can't let things get into your way, you just have to endure the punishment and keep walking along, in the end the cuts and bruises heal and you're a tough son of a gun ready to keep moving on.

Freedom of choice

Every decision you make creates the future, you may like or you may not, only you can really decide what happens. I personally like making my own decisions. You want to know why? Well i'm going to tell you anyway, I choose what I want to do everyday without people having me do it. I like being responsible for myself and occasionally helping a lost soul find its way back onto the path. It makes me feel free, and that's a feeling everyone wants, freedom. The game of "freedom" only gives you a certain amount of chances until its over and you loose. My father always told me " I will let you make your own decisions, but remember you're only going to hang yourself" those were words I took advantage of and lets just say that the summer before freshman year... I didn't really get enjoy the sun that much due to poor choices and decision making. A quick little story explains how there is cons to "freedom", so my friends and I wanted to have fun at the local park and I asked my dad if I could go and he simply said "your choice" and I ran out the door and had a blast with my friends till about 3am. In that time from 8pm to 3am we had gone riding at all our favorites spots, told stories and did some unthinkable things. As it got to about 1am it was just Quinten, Joeseph, and I and we wanted to go to the skate which was about 4miles away. half way there Joe left cause he was tired so we let him walk home by himself and continued our adventure. Police officers followed us right after we left the skatepark and we got scared and started running. The biggest mistakes of ours life's. They chase us down and caught me in front a church and eventually Quinten came out of hiding. Lets just say the police officers were kind enough to take us home and tell our parents what happened. We both basically dug a hole and let all the crap pile on us and we were both grounded for 2 weeks during a heat spell in Washington, temperatures rose to about 110 and everyone was at the lake and river while we sat home and cooked from the outside in. If you're going to make your own choices stop and think about which one will benefit you most and won't come and bite you in the near future.

No child left untableted

Okay so after I had read this article (The title of post), my response to it is that more schools need to get with the program! Learning through open sources such as tablets or even the basic smartphone is going to he the next thing. For the teachers that don't agree with the program and what is has to offer, well you better find a new job cause they are going to leave you in the past. Open source learning is a much easier way to learn and its more fun. It gives us the opportunity to increase the rate we learn, increase the way we think and increase the way we think. Also its easier for the teachers because they can have the students do an assignment on their blog and when they post it, it shows what time and day they did it so the teacher knows if its pate or on time and instead of looking through hundreds of papers trying to find a single assignment all they have to do is look at the blog and look at the assignments. Its just that simple. Get on the train that has open source learning on it and let it blow you away.

Declaration of learning independence

Okay so I really don't know what I'm supposed to be writting about... but I'm going to take a shot at it. So today we were talking about our big questions and how we should incorporate it with or expository composition class. Which had me kind of stagnant in the mind. Then we also talked about collaborative groups and my friend Elias were blabbing on about how we would like to start a health and fitness group and maybe even create a new website/blog that we both give advice to people who want it.

Lit Analysis

Topic and Events
1.a) This book is emotionally depressing. It's about a boy who's mother physically, emotionally, and mentally destroyed this boy,David Pelzer. David is also the author of this book which basically makes it a autobiography. This is book number two, in this book Davids mother loses custody to David, he became a member of the foster care family system. After a month or so, David gets adopted by Mrs. C and starts his new life with this family with Lilian, Rudy(mom and father), Big Larry, Larry and Chris.
b) In one sentence this story is about about who starts a new life in presence of a foster care family.
2. My author decided to write about this because this was his life, this is what he had to endure as a he grew up. He wrote all of this and made it into books probably so that other people who had lived like that could relate to this and then don't feel alone. He wants people to be able to survive and he wants them to be able to push on and not lose hope.
3. I chose this book because this book was the sequel to " A child called it" and that book was pretty good. This book really appealed to me because I like these kinds of books.. Its sad but when you get a book that you can relate to, I wasn't raised like that but my parents weren't always there for me and I felt alone, I felt like it was my fault, so when I find books like these I have to read it.
4. I find this book really realistic, I myself can make connections to this book. I can make connections due to the fact that I didn't have the most wonderful childhood either and i don't want to get to deep into that.
People.
1) I believe Pelzers tone is mentally and emotionally destroying, yet its also hopeful and joyful. His mother abused him, then he gets put into the foster care system and actually starts a new life. It has its ups and then hits you with its downs. Okay, I want to justify my statement more clear, the authors tone through out the story is real, it can happen, its happened and abuse of children is real. There wasn't only David at the foster care house, there was many other kids who have struggled like he did. His choices are pretty straight forward, he saw his chance to escape his mothers deadly grasp and he snatched it right out of the air.
2) The two people I'm going to describe is Davids dad and Big larry. Davids dad is a Ex firefighter who has aged due to the fact of alcohol abuse to his body, the break through all of the stress his wife has put onto to him from abusing David, he is average height, dark hair, brown eyes and he is depressed because his wife controls his life. He is easily pushed over and controlled, he allows everything to go on because he is to scared to stick up for David. If this was a fiction book, i would characterize him with an in-direct approach. Big Larry is obviously big in height and weight, he has brown hair and brown eyes, he's goofy and likes to help people feel more comfortable in these kinds of situations and he's very mature but then again very stagnant minded sometimes.
3) I chose these two characters because both are trying to help David move on in life, they both want the best for him.
Style
1) Honestly I don't know what kind of style he used to write this story. I mean he kind of goes day by day and explains main events or main scenes from his childhood. I don't know if that would really be classified as a "Journalistic" style? There aren't a lot of dates that suggest that it would be similar to a journal log.
2) He doesn't really use long descriptions of people and places, he focuses more on actions and dialogue. His choice to this makes the story less of a drag and keeps the excitement up of what kind of problems or situations he will be facing in the near future of the story.
3)  Well this book is about his real life situations as a child, so he uses realistic words, actions, dialogue and more to make the reader under stand that this is real. The scenes in this story are similar to what other foster children could say they experienced, like being a outcast at school, not feeling like you're really normal, its all real.
4) I'm positive his attitude towards it all was determination. Determination to be free, to tell his story, to prove that child abuse does occur in places in the U.S., to provide security and help for those that need it.
5)No resources were provided except his vague memories of it all.
Enduring Memory
One thing I'm going to remember after reading this story is to be more compassionate towards others and to not judge others right off the first glance without actually breaking a conversation. You cant judge someone who has cuts on their wrist by saying oh  she's emo and does it for attention, but really she cuts herself because it eases all the pain the pain and stress she has in her personal life. People shouldn't outcast other people out like that, instead they should try to help, try to be someone in their life that cares and wants them to get better.

WILL STUDY FOR FOOD

Okay so I will not be attending college next year, I have already started my path to joining the marines and being in Combat support. I chose to go into the military because they basically pay for you to learn and give you the experience in the classroom and also the experience on the field when you have to serve your time. They also give you great benefits such as health, dental, and whatever else insurance. They help you get house, and its a for sure paycheck every week and you can retire pretty young. If you don't know what to do after high school.. join the military because they build a foundation for you to start the rest of your life.

P.S. If you're a person from a foreign country or another state and have questions for me. Please leave a comment and I will try to help you out. :D

Essay Idea

Okay, so today in class my group and I decided that since we have been talking about obesity the past couple days, that we should do an essay about how to fight obesity! We haven't really decided if its going to be a persuasive essay or if its going to be a exposition essay(tell reader why and how to do it Vs. simply explain how to fight it& and not directed to reader).

Pros and Cons: Obesity

SO i reviewed Johnas blog and looked at the article she had choosen, the article explained how 1/4 of the schools in america send fat letters to the parents of children who are checked as being over weight for their height, weight and age. I use her article as a resource for the pro and cons part of this because it explains how the letter can backfire, the parents will single out the child as other family can indulge themselves with treats as this child is forced to be excluded from treats and sweets. Another way it can backfire is if the child is an athlete, myself for example have gone to get checked and i think almost every time i get checked, they confirm me to "obese" and then they explain to me that i shouldn't be concerned because i'm an athlete and that i have more muscle then i do fat ( muscle weighs more then fat) which makes me heavier. Now, the most obvious con about the fat letters is that what if other children at the school find out that the child was classified as being obese, then the teasing and bullying starts only to worsen the kids social life and maybe even put him/her in a depression. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_139942.html This article explains that the cons of being over weight have to deal with serous health issues such as heart disease, mood problems, energy problems, breathing problems and affects the joints of the children/teens. Now lets talk about the pros of the fat letters,http://pulse.seattlechildrens.org/fat-letters-from-schools-spur-childhood-obesity-debate/ < is an article explaining the fat letters can be a wake up call for the parents and gives tips and advice on how to prevent your child from being unhealthy and over weight.
